A brief history of People in Action (Leeds)


(1983 - 2010)

2010 Restructure of People in Action and becoming national.

2009 Henry Smith Charity funding for Members Engagement Coordinator

2008 - Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of People In Action.

2008 Establishment of Peoples Place Multi- Cultural Centre for people with learning difficulties and disabilities

2007 Funding from the Parenting Fund services for parents with learning difficulties and disabilities and families

2006 – Baroness Nicky Chapman becomes Patron of People in Action.

2005-2006 - The NEW FACE of People in Action – The organisation gets a new logo and a new look.

2005 – Secured a contract with Learning and Skills Council – to increase awareness of learning difficulties and disabilities in further education

2004 – People In Action wins West Yorkshire Social Enterprise Scholarship to develop social firms.

2003 – ROOOTS social firm of people with learning difficulties and disabilities starts to offer training and consultancy

2003 – Took on the contract to support the 11 Leeds Gateway and other social clubs.

2003 – First Connexions Personal Advisers appointed to work with Young People.

1996 - People In Action pioneers Information Service (now provided by Through The Maze).

1996 - People In Action employs first African Caribbean worker.
Removing Barriers set up

1995 - Arts Club (Pyramid of Arts) joins People In Action

1992 - UMEED Asian Carers Group forms, supported by People In Action

1990 - People In Action brings performance group Heart 'n Soul to Leeds.

1989 - 1990 – People In Action starts first small group activity with sessional worker and volunteers. (Before this all our volunteers were linked with individuals. By 1995 most People In Action activity takes place in groups).

1989 – People In Action goes independent.

1988 – People In Action employs first South Asian worker.

1986 - A volunteer from People In Action works alongside student with learning disabilities in ‘mainstream’ weaving course at Swarthmore.

1983 - Leeds Council for Voluntary Service sets up a project called Sharing Care, which changes its name to People in Action in 2000.
