Ellen & William Craft – Freedom Fighters!

Ellen and William Craft were freedom fighters.

They were slaves in Georgia, USA until they escaped in 1851 and came to Britain.

They escaped with Ellen dressed in men’s clothes and William pretending to be her ‘slave’.

The Crafts toured Britain, speaking against slavery in America to large audiences.

They helped to organise the London Emancipation Society while continuing to lecture throughout the UK.

In 1860, under William’s name, they published the story of their escape as Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom
